What does it take to make big accomplishments?

I know some people who have accomplished really big things, things that make contributions to our town and our state. I was wondering, what does it take to pull these things off? Does it take special gifts? Lots of money? unnatural drive?
I was hoping to find answers to these questions by interviewing them and writing up their stories. I was guided in this by Joseph Campbell's writing on "the hero's journey." Dr. Campbell analyzed mythic stories from many cultures and found that they have many things in common, which I will describe later. (see

I don't consider these friends of mine to be heroes, not in the sense of rushing into a burning building and dragging someone out, or in the sense of having super powers But I do consider these accomplishments to be journeys which took commitment and sacrifice, as so many things in lives do.
I have room on these pages for more stories of big accomplishments, so after you've read at least the first one, if there are people in your life have done big things and you want to write about them, please do and send them to me, and i'll publish them here.

I had a neighbor in East Lansing who decided to take a big physical journey, a trek to the north pole. I haven't written about her yet, but I might. I'll never forget her answer to my first question: How did you prepare for this? She said she spent a lot of time with her head in the freezer. I got a kick out of that.
